Uganda marks 25th anniversary of UN Resolution on Women, Peace and Security

As women join the global community in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, civil society and women’s rights organisations in Uganda have lauded government’s efforts in implementing the resolution.

Speaking ahead of the commemorations at the Uganda Media Centre, Rita Aciro, executive director of the Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET), said this year’s theme is “When Women Lead, Peace Follows.”

She noted that as the world reflects on the progress made since the adoption of the resolution, there is a need for increased government funding to enhance its implementation and address the specific needs of women across the country.

“As women in Uganda, we continue to experience cases of domestic violence, and we still have low female representation, especially in security forces such as the police and the military,” Aciro said.

“I urge security agencies to prioritise the recruitment and promotion of women within their ranks. This will not only promote gender equality but also strengthen women’s participation in decision-making processes going forward.”

According to the latest survey on women’s representation and participation in leadership in Uganda, women currently occupy 45% of cabinet positions, 34% of parliamentary seats, and 49.6% of positions in the judiciary.
