Gov’t to exempt Kanungu businessman from paying taxes after his prostrate enlarges

Government has indicated that it intends to waive taxes totaling Shs 1.6 bn from real estate businessman Donati Kananura due to ill health.

Henry Musasizi, the minister of state for Finance said government had considered Kananura’s health condition before coming up with the proposal. Musasizi said Kananura’s prostate had enlarged and he was suffering from diabetes.

Kananura is a prominent businessman from Kanungu and a regime apologist. He owns a number of businessess including tea estates, investment in minerals and real estate.

In total has asked Parliament to exempt eight companies and individuals from paying taxes worth Shs13.391Bn, citing reasons like effects of Covid-19 pandemic on their businesses and ill health, despite a recent report revealing that Uganda lost over Shs12 trillion in five years through these tax waivers.

Besides Kananura, other entities that are going to be given tax waivers are: Nkumba University, J2E Investment Corporation Limited, Nicontra Ltd, Kisiizi Hospital Power Ltd, Busoga University, Makerere Business Institute and businessman Peter Lokwang.
