Kasese-The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) has handed over 14 DR Congo fishermen who had strayed into Uganda’s waters with their fishing gear. DR Congo also handed over four Ugandan nationals and their equipment including 16 engine boats. Also handed back to DR Congo were 67 engine boats.
The fishermen from both countries had been arrested for trespassing in Lake Edward, which borders the two countries.
The handover ceremony was presided over by the RDC Kasese Lt Joe Walusimbi and local leaders in Kabatooro town council, Kasese district. It was witnessed by Col. Ehuta Sharles and Lt.Col Ishango Jean from DR Congo.
Lt. Lauben Ndifula, the spokesperson of FPU said the relationship Uganda and DRC share is paramount.
“That is why as leaders we should continue sensitizing our people on laws governing our lakes,” he said.
Lt. Walusimbi urged fishermen to desist from illegal acts and to conduct their business in peace .
“Work hand in hand with the law enforcement bodies and avoid being humiliated in public,” he said.
