‘You are not welcome to our country,’ US tells Among, Magogo

The United States has told Speaker Anita Among and her husband, Moses Magogo that they should not step in the vast country due to alleged corruption and abuse of human rights.

US becomes the second major country to slap sanctions on Among after the UK which did in April.

It’s sanctions, however, are more extensive and they encompass relatives of banned individuals.

In a statement signed by the US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, Among has been banned with other officials like Amos Lugolobi, minister of state for Finance; Gen Peter Elwelu, the former deputy CDF and former ministers Agnes Nandutu and Goretti Kitutu.

The US statement on the sanctions

“Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is designated due to involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament,” the Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Elwelu was sanctioned due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights.

“Specifically, Peter Elwelu was involved, while commanding UPDF forces, in extrajudicial killings that were committed by members of the UPDF.  As a result of these actions, the designated Ugandan officials are generally ineligible for entry into the United States,”  the statement said.

The US said it will impose visa restrictions on several other Ugandan officials for undermining the democratic process and repressing members of marginalized or vulnerable populations in Uganda.
