Witness sweats during cross-examination in the Pastor Kayanja sodomy case

Alex Wakamala, a 30-year-old boda-boda rider, yesterday faced intense cross-examination at the Mwanga II Court in a case involving allegations against Rubaga Miracle Centre senior pastor, Robert Kayanja. Wakamala is one of nine men accused of falsely claiming that Pastor Kayanja committed unnatural offenses and trespassing at his church premises.

In his sworn defense, Wakamala alleged that Kayanja inappropriately touched him and engaged in non-consensual sexual acts. However, during cross-examination by State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya, Wakamala struggled to provide clear answers regarding key details.

He could not specify when he purchased his phone, the type of phone he owned, or the circumstances under which two phones, allegedly containing vital evidence, went missing. Wakamala claimed he owned multiple phones and transferred data between them but failed to provide a coherent reason for doing so.

Muwaganya challenged Wakamala’s credibility, alleging that one of the phones was given to him during a meeting at Christian Life Church, owned by Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga. Wakamala denied attending any such meeting. Muwaganya further accused Wakamala and the other defendants of being coached and provided with planted evidence to tarnish Kayanja’s reputation.

“You were coached, evidence was planted in your hands, you were paid, and used as a tool to defame Pastor Kayanja,” Muwaganya argued.

Court evidence included videos from a press conference held on August 2, 2021, at an undisclosed location, where Wakamala and other accused individuals demanded unpaid “salaries” from Kayanja and threatened revenge. This alleged revenge culminated in their attempted trespass at Rubaga Miracle Centre on September 17, 2021, leading to their arrest.

Additional video evidence revealed that the accused, including Wakamala, were previously welcomed at Rubaga Miracle Centre. Many were described as former street criminals and drug addicts who had sought transformation through Kayanja’s ministry.

Photos presented in court showed some of the accused, including Reagan Sentongo and Collins Kisakye, attending a meeting at Ssenyonga’s Christian Life Church, where Wakamala was allegedly given a phone and coached to blackmail Pastor Kayanja.

Further cross-examination of Wakamala is scheduled to continue on September 10, 2025.
