In 2005, several prominent people in the region died, among them John Garang, the SPLA leader who perished in a chopper crash. There was also Patrick Musisi, the MP for Busiro South, who passed on in May 2025. Kevin Aliro, a very prominent journalist who co-founded Daily Monitor in 1992 and The Observer in 2004, died in November 2005.
