Beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in Wakiso district have been urged to invest the funds wisely in income-generating projects.
Rehema Nagudi, an agricultural officer at Kasangati Town Council, gave the advice during a monitoring meeting for beneficiaries from Wampeewo and Bulamu parishes. The event was held at Wampeewo Primary School and Bulamu Kitawuluzi.
Speaking to Bbeg Media, Nagudi said: “We are here to sensitise beneficiaries on the proper use of parish development funds so they can improve their living standards through small-scale income-generating projects.”
For poultry farming, she said a beneficiary receiving Shs 1 million could spend Shs 280,000 on 100 chicks at 2,800 shillings each, allocate funds for starter and grower feeds, and use the balance for medicine, feeders (Shs 20,000), and drinkers (Shs 80,000).
She said broiler chickens could be sold after six to eight weeks at Shs 12,000 each, yielding Shs 1.2 million. Repeating the cycle three times could generate Shs 3.6 million, she added, enabling farmers to improve livelihoods and reduce poverty.
In horticulture, she said, a tomato farmer receiving Shs 1 million could spend Shs 450,000 on Anso seeds, Shs 300,000 on fertiliser, Shs 80,000-100,000 on a pump, and the rest on labour, especially for elderly farmers.
A single harvest could yield 30 crates, sold at Shs 300,000 each. Funds must be repaid after two years to allow others to benefit.
Judith Kukiriza, a poultry and geese farmer from Seeta, encouraged diversification into goose rearing due to its ready market and steady demand. She praised the presidential initiative for targeting low-income earners.
Esther Nankanja, who grows matooke, Irish potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, and carrots, said PDM funds had expanded her business. She said she now earns Shs 200,000 monthly.
Juma Kigongo, deputy RDC for Kasangati, commended residents for embracing government programmes but warned leaders against favouring friends and family. The scheme targets vulnerable groups, he stressed.
Saudah Nabbumba, assistant presidential secretary for PDM at State House, urged support for President Museveni and NRM candidates in the 2026 elections.
“Avoid the opposition. They have nothing to offer. Only NRM and Museveni deliver security and development,” she said.
