Moses Magogo has been caught in the crossfire of the sanctions slapped on Speaker Anita Among today by the US over alleged corruption and human rights violations.

Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the US State Department, said the sanctions encompass the spouses of the affected officials and in this case, Magogo, who is husband to Among also happens to be the president of FUFA.

What this means is that Magogo will not be able to travel to the United States which will be one of the three hosts for the 2026 World Cup either as a federation head or as part of Uganda Cranes, should our national football team qualify for the cup.

It will be a big blow for Magogo who last year vowed to do everything to ensure that the Cranes qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He has been at the helm of FUFA since August 2013 when he succeeded Lawrence Mulindwa.

Magogo also lost his spot on the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) last year.

The US sanctions fall under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024 (Div. F, P.L. 118-47) .

Under this section: “Officials of foreign governments and their immediate family members about whom the Secretary of State has credible information have been involved, directly or indirectly, in significant corruption, including corruption related to the extraction of natural resources, or a gross violation of human rights shall be ineligible for entry into the United States.”

Therefore, unless the sanctions are overturned by the US Secretary of State, for the time being Magogo looks set not to travel to the US for the world’s biggest football showpiece.
