Stanbic Bank, Afrigo Band donate Shs 20 million to Uganda Cancer Institute

Stanbic Bank, in partnership with Afrigo Band, donated Shs 20 million in medical equipment and supplies to the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) to support cancer care.

The donation included adult mattresses, colostomy bags, patient monitors, wheelchairs, chemo chairs, examination couches, hospital blankets, and food items.

The contribution was made ahead of Afrigo Band’s 50th anniversary celebration, which will feature a performance at Millennium Grounds in Kampala.

Tickets for the event are available at discounted rates through Stanbic’s FlexiPay platform or USSD code *291#.

Diana Ondoga, Stanbic’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, emphasized the importance of community efforts in raising cancer awareness and promoting early detection.

“Cancer is an urgent and growing health concern that requires a concerted community effort to combat,” Ondoga said.

Dr. Henry Ddungu of UCI expressed gratitude, noting that previous donations, like beds and cervical cancer screening equipment from 2023, continue to serve patients effectively.

“I want to thank Stanbic Bank for always keeping the Uganda Cancer Institute at heart. This is not the first time we are receiving your support, and we appeal to you to keep coming back, because our needs continue to grow with the problems we face,” Ddungu said.

UCI handles 36,000 new cancer cases annually and sees nearly 500 outpatients daily.

Afrigo Band’s Rachael Magoola highlighted the band’s personal connection to the cause, having lost friends and fans to cancer.

“Throughout our 50-year music journey, Afrigo Band has lost a number of friends and fans to cancer; therefore, joining hands to raise awareness about this killer disease is a contribution I am proud to affiliate with,” she said.

Stanbic’s Lois Kwikiriza reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to community health and growth, encouraging Ugandans to buy discounted tickets for the upcoming show via FlexiPay.

“The Shs 20 million donation marks another milestone in Stanbic’s ongoing collaboration with UCI. We have walked an amazing journey with the Institute; in 2023, Stanbic provided two beds and Pap smear kits to aid early cervical cancer testing,” she said.
