Speaker Anita Among has instructed the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to investigate forces behind those who are allegedly abusing her on social media platforms.
Among told MPs in a plenary sitting today morning that she had been wrongly accused, on social media, of barking at David Bahati, the minister of State for Industries over protests by traders against the high taxes imposed by government.
“I am lucky that I am not on social media because I don’t like stress. There was something written on social media circulating that yesterday, I barked at Minister Bahati, as being one of the worst Ministers in capable of running the Ministry of Trade, that is why traders are striking. This is very false, very untrue and too malicious. I want UCC to investigate this and I want to get the sponsors of this,” Among said.
While she said she is not on social media, there is a verified handle under her name on X (formerly twitter) which regularly posts about her work. We have been told that the handle is operated by her office.
Her latest stance, however, contradicts her earlier position when she implored MPs to ignore “rumours” on social media at the height of the #UgandaParliamentExhibition, where gross abuse of public resources by the House was unearthed.
Among has previously accused one of her predecessors of being behind a scheme to soil her image. She did not mention the name.
