Today’s March to Parliament demo kicked off in a lukewarm style after security operatives arrested several suspected ring leaders and deployed heavily to scare would be protestors.
In the city centre and downtown, there was heavy security presence. Military police personnel were seen patrolling the streets armed with guns and batons.
Heavy military vehicles like the ones used in war zones were seen being driven around. At Parliament which was supposed to be the epicenter. security had cordoned off several roads.
Some of the youth who tried to move with placards were violently arrested and bundled onto police pickups
Amid this deployment there were reports that some of the youth had been kidnapped.
One of them Faiza Salima aka Faiza Fabz, a show host at KFM and a digital influencer wrote at 11.00 AM that she had been taken to Jinja Road police station. Others arrested are Baron Edgar, who works at Radio City FM and comedian Lubega Obedi known as Reign Omusoyisoyi, who was picked up at his residence in Mutungo.
However, the arrests did not dampen the enthusiasm of some of the protestors only that many preferred to protest in the safe confines of their offices and homes.
On social media, some youth were seen holding placards with inscriptions: “Anita Must Go”, “Enough is Enough”, “Stop Corruption.”
Currently there is an uneasy calm in the city.
