Rugby: Stanbic Black Pirates send title warning with big win

The Stanbic Pirates always mean business

Defending champions Stanbic Black Pirates produced a dominant display at the weekend, defeating Rhinos Rugby Club 45–10 to move to the top of the rugby league table.

Played in a heavy Saturday downpour, the match tested both sides’ discipline and tactical organisation. The Pirates adapted better to the conditions, combining structured phase play with sustained intensity to dismantle the Rhinos.

Umar Duff scored two well-worked tries, while Alex Ariho and Allan Karuhanga, nicknamed the Speed Merchant, kept up the pressure in open play.

Captain Isaac Massa marshalled his side with authority, ensuring defensive solidity and quick transitions from defence to attack. William Nkore was accurate from the tee, adding the conversions that steadily extended the lead and put the result beyond doubt.

Head coach Marvin Ondogo’s decision to utilise his full 23-man squad proved decisive. The depth and cohesion of the Byeyogerere-based side were evident despite the slippery conditions.

The win lifts the Pirates one point above title rivals Mongers Rugby Club, Buffaloes and Heathens Rugby Club, who are on 12 and 11 points respectively.

Celebrations later continued at Rugby Chill, where supporters marked the victory, boosted by discounted drinks offered through Stanbic Bank’s FlexiPay platform.
