Information about his death remains scanty but we are told that Kasasira perished in an accident in Lyantonde this afternoon.

Police in Masaka say the driver of the car he was traveling in, a Toyota Fielder (UBK 851Y) lost control and fell into a valley dam along the Lyantonde-Kashagama Road. The vehicle was being driven by Kasasira’s wife Charlotte Nshimire, 36, who survived with injuries.

Two other occupants, both children, also survived according to Twaha Kasirye, Police’s public relations officer in Greater Masaka. Kasasira’s body was taken to Lyantonde Hospital mortuary while the wife and children are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

We have been told that Kasasira had gone to Lyantonde to visit close relatives.

Julius Galisonga, a lawyer, wrote on X that he had talked to Kasasira a few hours before his death.

“You speak with someone at 12:30, crack a few jokes, at 15hrs a call comes in to tell you he has died in an accident. A very humble and nice character. Risdel Kasasira too bad you have died,” Galisonga wrote.

Kasasira was an affable and laid-back journalist who broke several stories related to security at the Daily Monitor.

He broke the story of Gen David Sejusa’s letter that claimed that President Museveni was grooming his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to succeed him. Sejusa later fled to exile before returning to the country in 2015.

In 2010, Kasasira also did a series of articles from Somalia where he was embedded with UPDF soldiers deployed to keep peace there. He highlighted the challenges and triumphs of the Ugandan soldiers stationed there.

He started out at Ultimate Media, a news agency in the early 2000s before he joined Daily Monitor where he worked for more than 15 years. He left in 2020 and started doing freelance work for foreign news agencies.
