During the NRM Kyakwanzi retreat of February 2014, Evelyn Anite tabled the motion to have President Museveni as the sole party candidate in 2016. The move was meant to weaken Amama Mbabazi’s bid for the presidency, which it did.
Yet as Anite started garnering signatures from MPs for her motion, two ministers said to be sympathetic to Mbabazi quietly moved out of the hall and retreated to a corner. One of them was the late Gen Aronda Nyakairima, the minister of Internal Affairs.
