Patience Akumu: The young lawyer, journalist scaling greater heights

Patience Akumu, a former fearless features writer for The Observer and a strong-willed feminist has joined the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Geneva. She will work as Communications and Advocacy Manager for their End Malaria project.

She has been working as Programme Policy Officer at The World Food Programme (WFP) since June 2021.

Akumu has also worked as a Knowledge Management and Communications Specialist USAID; Global Media Officer at Oxfam; Head of Research and Advocacy at the Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum (HRAPF) and as a Communications and Legal Officer at the Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO).

A lawyer and journalist, Akumu has written broadly and incessantly about sexual minorities and won awards for her endeavors.

Her works have appeared in international media such as The Guardian and Observer, New Internationalist, The Independent, Times London and Africa in Fact. My work has also appeared on BBC, Al Jazeera and ARD Geman TV.

Akumu describes herself as “an unapologetic feminist and social justice campaigner dedicated to influencing policies so that they address income inequality and cater for the interests of the indigent, women, children and minorities.”

Talking about her new post in Geneva, Akumu said: “My family and I are preparing to move, and it is as scary as it is exciting. Still, the conversation for a more inclusive world, this time through the malaria lens, continues.”
