Once upon a time...There was a powerful gentleman at the Electoral Commission by the names of Sam Rwakoojo. He was the commission’s secretary.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! So powerful was Rwakoojo that EC commissioners who were his bosses on paper, were careful not to annoy him. Nothing, not even a pen or a ream of paper, could be bought at the EC without his express approval.
He was said to have the ear of the president, who appointed him in 2001 without the hassle of going through a formal job interview.
See...after Rwakoojo lost to Theodore Ssekikuubo in Lwemiyaga in 2001, he “roamed the streets for six months without a job” (his words).
Then someone tipped him that there was a vacancy at the EC and using his connections, he landed the job.
In 2002… he told a parliamentary committee that probed how he got the job that “he did not care how he was appointed.”
For 19 years, he was the chief accounting officer at EC and oversaw three election cycles including the one of 2016 where his wife, Robinah Rwakoojo, was elected MP for Gomba West.
Then… in July 2020, six months to the 2021 elections, Museveni fired him. The president did not give reasons but Rwakoojo and other members were given 48 hours to clear out.
Since then, Rwakoojo has disappeared from the public limelight but we understand that he spends most of his time at his Gomba farm, attending to his cows and other businesses.
