NUP asks Mpuuga to step down for irregularly pocketing Shs 500 million

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has asked the former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga to step down as parliamentary commissioner with immediate effect after he admitted to irregularly pocketing Shs 500 million from Parliament.

The payment came to light during a campaign to expose rot in Parliament codenamed: #UgandaParliamentExhibition. It was paid as a ‘thank you’ gesture to Mpuuga.

In a statement, NUP said Mpuuga had admitted taking the money in a meeting of the party’s senior leadership chaired by Robert Kyagulanyi, the party president.

“The nation will recall that the values of the National Unity Platform are discipline, reliability, inclusiveness, integrity, values, patriotism and discipline. All actions of corruption and abuse of office go contrary to these values,” the party said in a statement dated February 28, 2024.
