NIRA says over 10 million Ugandans have renewed national IDs

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has confirmed that more than 10 million Ugandans have renewed their national identity cards since the mass renewal and registration exercise commenced in May 2025.

The nationwide initiative aims to register or renew IDs for approximately 33 million citizens. The exercise targets 15.8 million individuals whose national IDs expired in June 2025 and an additional 17.2 million citizens who have never been registered.

Christopher Kantinti, the director of the ICT Department at NIRA, noted a decline in registration numbers during the recent school holidays, as a significant portion of the target population comprises children.

“With schools now reopened, we are collaborating with the Ministry of Education to register students for their National IDs,” Kantinti stated.

During a media breakfast meeting held on Tuesday at NIRA’s headquarters in Kololo to mark International ID Day, Clare Ollama, a NIRA registrar, urged citizens to take advantage of the remaining time to register or renew their IDs.
The mass renewal and registration exercise, which began on 27 May 2025, is scheduled to run for six months.
