Next Media will launch a campaign to fight the proliferation of fake news in Uganda’s media industry. The function will take place tomorrow at Next Media Park in Naguru.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In a letter inviting stakeholders, Kin Kariisa, the Chief Executive Officer of Next Media said the campaign will last two years and is aimed at empowering citizens to differentiate genuine from fake news.
It is also aimed at promoting “ethical reporting” across media organizations.
The spread of fake news in Uganda has been enabled by the growing prominence of social media where everyone with a smart phone can instantly publish news.
The global economy lost an estimated $78 billion as a result of fake news in 2023.
As one of the most influential news organizations, it ought to be noted that the Naguru-based organization has been a victim of fake news. Some of its critics however also argue that it has at times been a purveyor of misinformation.
