NEMA halts illegal developments in Ssezibwa wetland

Part of Ssezibwa wetland has been degraded by developers

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has halted illegal developments along the Ssezibwa water catchment system in Wakiso, warning that the activities posed a threat to biodiversity and community wellbeing.

In a statement posted on its official X account, NEMA said key suspects were arrested and machinery impounded after enforcement officers found ongoing works without the required approvals for a planned industrial facility.

“On site, active dumping and earthworks were found, all without permits. Uganda’s wetlands are protected by law and violations attract tough penalties of up to Shs600m or 12 years in prison,” the authority said.

NEMA said compliance with the National Environment Act, Cap 181, is mandatory for all developments. It emphasised that wetlands are protected by law and that enforcement operations will continue against offenders.

Under the Act, every person has the right to a clean and healthy environment in line with the Constitution and the principles of sustainable development.

Under these provisions, any person may bring an action before a competent court to enforce environmental rights.

In the statement, NEMA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s wetlands and called on developers to adhere strictly to environmental laws.
