Nakaseke: 74% of UPDF applicants have Western Uganda ‘sounding names’

At least 74% of the individuals who have been shortlisted to join the UPDF in Nakaseke district appear to be from Western Uganda if the sound of their names is anything to go by.

According to the list of 31 shortlisted applicants, only eight individuals (Peter Kassaga, Ronald Kakooza, Peter Akena, Anita Chepkomwoi, Vincent Ekimu , Paul Kitaka, Henry Kasibante and Andrew Jakisa) appear to have names that don’t sound like those from Western Uganda.

The list of shortlisted UPDF recruits from all districts in Uganda can be accessed here.. https://www.updf.go.ug/careers/

In a statement, the UPDF deputy spokesperson, Col Deo Akiiki said “the recruitment exercise will begin on the 1st day of July 2024 and end on the 14th day of July 2024 at different recruitment centres.”

Nakaseke falls in Buganda sub region and previously the UPDF leadership has emphasized that in its quest to have a regionally balanced army, each region/district is given a specific quota.

Yet it is probable that since several generations of pastoralists from Western Uganda have settled in Nakaseke for decades, the ethnic mix of the population in the district has been significantly altered. Therefore, the applicants with Western Uganda sounding names could be hailing from the district.

It is also significant to note that of the eight shortlisted applicants with names, only four appear to have Kiganda names.

Nakaseke South MP, Paulson Luttamaguzi wondered whether the recruits had been “imported from other districts.”

“Uganda is rotten in all aspects,” he wrote on X.
