The minister of state for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo has said government will not close schools over the raging heat.
‘I understand there’s too much heat, but this will not make us close schools like our neighbouring country did, ” he said addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre.
There have been calls from some sections of the public to close schools due to the too much heat which the country has experienced in the last month. Temperatures in some places have ranged between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius.
South Sudan announced closure of schools last week to guard children against the heat.
But Muyingo instead urged parents and schools to take precautions and guard young ones against the heat.
The minister added that next year government will inject Shs 300 billion in Universal Primary Education and enforce attendence of learners.
“We have a budget of Shs 666bn set aside for education activities. We shall rehabilitate all affected primary schools with the help of local hovernments and 247 seed schools will be constructed,” he said. On March 21, the ministry will commemorate 27years of Universal Primary Education with a theme: ‘Learning for Lasting Peace.’
