President Museveni has paid tribute to the late Ali Kirunda Kivejinja for his contribution to the social-economic transformation of Uganda.
Museveni, who visited Kivejinja’s home in Buwabe, Bugweri, on his way to the Tarehe Sita celebrations in the district, said Kivejinja had played a big role in liberating the country. With the First Lady Janet Museveni looking on, Museveni placed a wreath on Kivejinja’s grave.
Kivejinja, then second deputy prime minister, succumbed to Covid-19 in December 2020. The president did not attend his burial and delegated former prime minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda to deliver his speech.
In his speech, Museveni described Kivejinja as a “Pan Africanist.”
Kivejinja, a Zoologist by training, was one of the most prominent mobilisers of Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM), the platform on which Museveni stood for the presidency in 1980.
