Former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, has said those who want to wrest power from President Museveni must be sober 24 hours a day.
Speaking at a social function in Mityana district over the weekend, Mpuuga said it is a pity that many players in the opposition spend a lot of time in bars and others take drugs.
“You can’t lead people [when you are not sober]. The one we want to remove from power does not even take wine while others speak and you wonder what have they taken or drank,” he said.
While he did not mention Robert Kyagulanyi by name, it was clear that this tirade was directed to the president of the National Unity Platform who in the past has admitted using drugs and alcohol. Kyagulanyi has however said that he dropped the habits and is now clean.
Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi fell out spectacularly this year over the Shs 500 million service award that was given to Mpuuga by Parliament.
NUP wanted Mpuuga to take back the money but the former LOP said he obtained it through the laid down procedures of Parliament.
In Mityana, Mpuuga said the standoff over this money shows that there are MPs who pass laws without understanding them.
“Tell those who want leadership to stop drinking alcohol and leave drugs and smoking pipes like the Kabaka advised. If you want leadership you must be sober 24 hours,” Mpuuga said.
