Makerere University has banned rallies within and outside the university for the forthcoming guild elections.
In a terse statement dated February 5, the university said guild presidential aspirants are not supposed to move with more than 15 individuals during the campaigns.
Aspirants are also forbidden from identifying with any political organisation while campaign hours have been restricted.
The election date is yet to be fixed.
Once known as a breeding ground for future political leaders, the university has under the leadership of Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, become a ruthless enforcer of political restrictions.
Critics allege Nawangwe has not stamped his authority and is remotely controlled by the NRM.
“He is just a yes man. Whatever NRM or Museveni wants, he does without question,” said a former lecturer who retired in 2016.
During last year’s elections, Makerere disqualified the National Unity Platform (NUP) official flag bearer Margaret Nattabi for organizing a physical activity that led to violence.
