Kayanja Case: Court challenges accused over phone contacts

Alex Wakamala, one of nine people accused of defaming Pastor Robert Kayanja, this week struggled to explain in court whether ot not he knew three of his co-accused: Agrey Kanene, Israel Wasswa, and Jamie Mwondha.

The group is charged at the Mwanga II Magistrate’s Court in Mengo, with spreading false stories and inappropriate comments to damage the pastor’s reputation.

These three claimed they had never met Wakamala before seeing him in court. To test this, the state attorney Jonathan Muwaganya asked Wakamala to dial the phone numbers of Kanene and Wasswa from his phone to see if he recognized them as associates of Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga.

Muwaganya also had Wakamala dial another number, which belonged to Pastor Ssenyonga himself. Wakamala admitted to having Ssenyonga’s number in his phone but denied knowing him or the others.

The court pressed Wakamala to explain why these numbers were in his phone if he didn’t know the individuals.

Earlier, the court had listened to audio recordings of someone pretending to be John Pantalewo, another co-accused, coaching others on what to say to make up false stories about Pastor Kayanja.

The case will continue on October 16, 2025.
