Retired Supreme Court judge, Prof George Kanyeihamba has said Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, still has a lot to learn if he is to lead Uganda.
Speaking to Digitalk TV, an online media platform, Kanyeihamba, who is now confined to a wheel chair, said although he had endorsed Kyagulanyi’s presidential bid in 2021, he had come to realize that the NUP president was not fit to run the country.
He said he had advised Kyagulanyi to work closely with Mengo in his quest to dislodge President Museveni but he had been disappointed with the NUP’s leader’s antagonistic stance towards Buganda.
He said he had met Kyagulanyi several times and offered him political advice.
“He has not taken my advice. I don’t see him relying on the advice of the Kabaka or the Katikkiro of Buganda. That is a terrible mistake. He has relied on young people who know very little about politics and who have no vision of Uganda. It would very ideal if he changed his politics and started trusting the Kabaka of Buganda or the Katikkiro but he does not show any intentions of doing that,” Kanyeihamba said.
Kanyeihamba said the only person who can lead the push for political change is Dr Kizza Besigye, the former leader of FDC and that Kyagulanyi needs to be a deputy of Besigye. He said this would be the ideal ticket for 2026 since President Museveni intends to stand again.
He said the standoff between NUP and Mathias Mpuuga over the Shs 500 million service award was not good for the country and needed to be resolved amicably.
Kanyeihamba served as attorney general in Museveni’s first cabinet before he joined the judiciary as Supreme Court judge. He has been critical about Museveni’s handling of governance issues and was one of the two judges who in 2006 ruled that then 2006 presidential elections were rigged in favour of the incumbent.
After he left the bench, he went into private legal practice and became a regular feature on various talk shows as a political analyst.
