Albert Cook Tugume, the young brother to Doreen Nyanjura, the Kampala deputy lord mayor had fought several battles.
He battled through school. He started one small business after another. Tugume, 33, did everything to make ends meet in this hectic city even if he had a famous sister.
Yesterday, Tugume, a proud Liverpool supporter, tried to put up the mother of all battles as armed thugs ransacked his small mobile money business asking him to surrender all the money.
He hesitated and made an alarm. A boda boda cyclist at a nearby stage, Barnabas Sabiti, tried to come to his rescue but his efforts were stopped by a bullet.
Tugume, too, tried to flee but did not make it far. Two bullets to the back felled him, cutting short the life of a young entrepreneur who thought better days were ahead.
Those who know him say he was a simple but very ambitious person. He hardly talked about his sister even if he was proud of her achievements.
Today at St Luke’s Church in Ntinda, there will be a service to remember his life.
In the meantime, Sabiti, who came to his rescue has also succumbed to bullet wounds at Mulago hospital this morning.
Life, this life!
