Grace Akifeza, an NRM leaning independent, was yestreday declared winner in the Kisoro Woman MP by-election.
She defeated the NRM candidate and her nemesis Rose Kabagyeni in a hotly contested race that had many intriguing twists and turns.
Akifeza garnered 50,459 votes compared to Kabagyeni’s 44, 982 votes.
She will replace Sarah Mateke, the former minister of state for Defence who died in September. National Unity Platform’s Sultana Salim Zubedi came third with a paltry 903 votes while UPC’s Mable Ingabire managed 362 votes.
Akifezi’s election is a slap in the face for President Museveni, the NRM chairman, who asked party supporters on Tuesday to rally behind Kabagyeni.
“Always ask candidates seeking for leadership which political party they belong to. If you don’t ask them, you will make mistakes. The NRM for many years has proven capacity to work for the development of the population unlike other parties who stunted the growth of Uganda for over 20 years after independence,” Museveni said.
