2024 Census: ‘Banyankore, Bakiga men marry at an older age’

Men in Ankole and Kigezi sub-regions tend to marry at an older age than their counterparts in other sub-regions, the 2024 National Housing and Population Census has revealed.

On average, men in Ankole and Kigezi marry at 25 years of age while their counterparts in Buganda, Busoga and Bunyoro marry at 23 years. Men in Acholi, Lango and Tooro averagely get married at 24 years.

As for the females, the average age of marriage appears to be 21 in nearly all sub-regions. However, women in Karamoja and Bunyoro marry at 20 years, the lowest according to the main census report released this week.

Overall, most Ugandan couples prefer to hold a customary marriage to any other form of marriage according to the report.

Scientific studies have shown that men who marry at a later age tend to experience a decline in sexual arousal, romantic urge and body fitness to cope with a good sexual life.

The studies show that the peak impact of the sex hormone, DHEA, is between 20 and 30 years and is found to decline with age. Testosterone, the male hormone, also declines with age in men.
