On February 28th when President Museveni launched the NRM member registration exercise, he claimed the party had 11 million members. Today when the exercise officially kicked off, there was little evidence to back up that claim.
Most centres visited by Bbeg Media had a handful of supporters. In others, those in charge of registration appeared bored and sleepy.
Jane Awuma a party registrar said that she opened up the center at Muyenga LC 1 at 8 am but by noon, she had not registered more than 10 members.
“Few people have turned up and even many of them are not in the register,” Auma said.
At another centre in Mengo, the situation was the same. The registrar blamed the poor turn up on the fact that there had not been mobilization and publicization of the exercise.
For others, their names could not be traced.
Yasin Omar the NRM chairperson in Bukasa Parish was shocked when he was told his name was not on the register.
He blamed it on foul play.
“I call upon president Museveni to weed out the wrong elements in the party before 2026 national elections,” Omar said.
The exercise ends on March 17.
