Female activists arrested for holding ‘illegal’ demo on Women’s Day

Police have arrested women activists led by Nana Mwafrika Mbirikiwa for staging a demonstration at the police headquarters in Naguru over delayed compensation.

Mbirikiwa was awarded Shs 47 million by court in 2022 after she was brutalised by the police. She said she is yet to receive a penny.

Mbirikiwa a human rights defender, first resisted arrest before female police officers forced her to climb on a pick up.

Police claimed that they had not sought permission to hold the demonstration.

She told journalists that after police brutalized her, she lost her uterus.

“My husband abandoned me because my uterus was removed,” she claimed.

The women, who marched from Nakawa market held placards calling for respect for human rights, condemning brutality against women. .

Mbirikiwa said they were concerned about the treatment of women even as the world celebrates International Women’s Day today.
