Sources: Patrick Kanyomozi seeks asylum in the US

Patrick Kanyomozi, a journalist, who  became famous for being critical of government on social media, is said to be seeking asylum in the United States.

Kanyomozi, who served as president of Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) resigned his position at KFM in December 2023.

In his farewell statement, he said he was leaving the media “for good.”

At that time there was talk that he had been lined up to replace Joel Ssenyonyi as spokesperson of the National Unity Platform. Ssenyonyi had been appointed Leader of Opposition.

However reliable sources in Kampala including his close associates have told us that Kanyomozi is now seeking asylum in the US. While his exact whereabouts in the vast North American country are unknown, he is believed to be in Boston.

He is said to have left Uganda early this year.

Kanyomozi, who started his career at Radio Buddu in Masaka, made a name as a witty critic of NRM on social media, taking scalps of those who dared to challenge him.

He was also an avid defender of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the president of NUP.

He last posted on his X handle on December 29, thanking KFM for being a good employer.  Since then, he has been reposting other people’s posts particularly those of Bobi Wine and NUP.

Sources told us that Kanyomozi has been quietly  “gathering evidence” of political persecution to beef up his asylum bid.

“He is trying to make a case that his life is in danger here and therefore he is safer in the US,” said one of his associates.

His wife, Lucky Mbabazi is a prominent radio personality and co-presents the early morning show on Capital FM.
