EC warns candidates against bribery as nomination exercise moves on smoothly

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission Justice Simon Byabakama has warned candidates against bribing voters saying this was against the electoral law.

Addressing the media today, Byabakama said the EC is working with the Police to monitor and investigate any allegations of voter bribery.

Byabakama said the nomination exercise for the various positions in the 2026 election has been smooth so far.

Last week, the EC concluded the nomination of candidates for local government councils ranging from district/city chairpersons, lord mayor, to councillors. This week, EC started started nominating candidates for municipality/city division chairpersons and councilors.

The nomination exercise for municipal division chairpersons and councilors will run from September 11th to 24th, and that for sub county and town chairpersons and councillors from September 11th to 24th.

“All nominations will take place at gazetted district/city or county Nomination Centres,” Byabakama said.

Byabakama emphasized the importance of adhering to nomination guidelines, including the submission of supporter lists two weeks prior to nomination dates for presidential candidates.

He also urged aspirants to use official channels for complaints rather than social media and to maintain peace during the electoral process.

He said presidential candidates will be nominated on Tuesday September 23rd, and Wednesday, September 24th, 2025. The nominations will take place at the EC head office Grounds in Lubowa, Kigo-Lweza Road, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

The commission said it had established a query/complaints desk at its head offices to assist with nomination queries and provide legal guidance.

Toll-free numbers (0800 300121, 0800 300122) and chargeable lines (0392 280498, 0392 004158, 0392 280488) are available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to support the public and election officials.
