The Family Division of the High Court has dissolved the marriage of a former assistant commissioner Dr Paul Kagwa Kuuku and ordered him to pay his ex-wife Shs 2.8 million, give her back her curtains and give her one cow.
The two had been married for 18 years.
Kagwa served as assistant commissioner for Health Promotion in the ministry of Health.
In an intriguing ruling on April 25, court also said the properties acquired by Kagwa during her marriage to Peace Uhirwe should not be shared because they are not “matrimonial properties.” They include houses in Kampala and Mpigi and a farm in Ntungamo district.
In 2023, Uhirwe had asked court to dissolve their marriage on the ground of adultery.
According to court documents seen by Bbeg Media, she accused Kagwa of sleeping with housemaids in their home in Lubowa and other women. She claimed Kagwa had sired children outside the wedlock.
Uhirwe said she had been psychologically tortured by Kagwa’s actions and behaviour and could no longer stay with him. She prayed the court dissolves their marriage.
Court presided over by Justice Alice Komuhangi concurred with Uhirwe and ruled to dissolve their marriage.
However, it is the terms of dissolution that appear to have caused a stir on social media.
For all the 18 years in marriage, Uhirwe will walk away with Shs 2.8 million, her curtains and one cow.
Court said that it deemed this to be fair compensation to Uhirwe for her years in marriage.
Kagwa and Uhirwe were told to meet their own legal costs.
Kagwa has had a controversy riddled career.
In 2014 after he retired, temporarily, from the ministry of Health, he sued his employers, Plan International after they terminated his contract six months into the job. He won the case and court awarded him Shs 110 million as general damages.
In the ministry of Health, Dr Kagwa led the crusade to reduce the price of female condoms, saying this will make them more accessible and reduce on the spread of STI/STDs.
He was nicknamed “Mr Condom.”
