City Tyre East Africa Badminton Challenge launched with support from Mandela Group

The 7th edition of the City Tyre East Africa Badminton Challenge was officially launched in Kampala yesterday. The event is scheduled to take place from October 16 to 19, 2025, at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Organised by the Uganda Badminton Association, the tournament is set to attract top talent from across the region, including teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Namibia, and Sudan. Team Uganda will field players across various categories, including amateur, university, corporate, and professional teams.

Speaking at the official launch in Kampala, Ahmed Omar Madela, chairman of Mandela Group and official sponsor through their Linglong brand, pledged full financial support for the tournament.

“My dream is to see sports in Uganda and East Africa grow to new heights. This marks the seventh consecutive year that we have proudly sponsored the City Tyre East Africa Badminton Challenge, and we remain committed to fostering talent and promoting sportsmanship in the region,” he said.

Simon Mugabi, the chairman of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), commended Mandela Group for their unwavering support.

“We are immensely grateful to Mr. Omaro Madela and the Mandela Group for their continued sponsorship, not only for badminton but also for basketball and football. Their dedication has been instrumental in the growth of sports in Uganda. With their support, our players are well-prepared and ready to deliver a strong performance at this year’s tournament,” Mugabi said.

The City Tyre East Africa Badminton Challenge has grown significantly since its inception, becoming one of the premier badminton events in the region. In addition to the competitive aspect, the event aims to promote unity, sportsmanship, and cultural exchange among participating nations.

The organizers said spectators can expect an exciting lineup of matches, with Team Uganda poised to leverage home advantage.

“We have ensured that the event adheres to international standards, with top-tier facilities at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium and officiating by qualified referees,” Mugabi added.
