Bushenyi man recovers eye sight during medical camp as Tayebwa promises full support

A man has revealed how his chance encounter with the national free surgical week in Ishaka, Bushenyi district, has completely altered his life.

His eyes shining with gratitude, Sam Ntumwa exclaimed, “I regained my eyesight after a successful cataract surgery. Thank you, ASOU and KIUTH.”

The medical camp organised by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU) and Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH). Ir was held from Septmeber 22 to 28 in Ishaka, Bushenyi district.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who officially closed the camp, hailed this occurrence and many others as the reason why medical camps continue to play a pivotal role in bringing health services closer to those who need them the most.

He pledged full parliamentary support for future medical camps.

“We will support all medical camps to bring healthcare closer to the people,” he assured, emphasizing Parliament’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility in Uganda.

The National Free Surgical Week addressed a wide range of medical conditions, including hernias, cataracts, orthopaedic issues, goitres, hydroceles, fistulas, tumors, urological issues, and gynaecological issues. Over 500 patients from five districts benefited from the camp, receiving quality healthcare services from a team of dedicated medical professionals.

“We’ll finish the task, ensuring everyone receives the care they need,” said Dr. Omar Umi Bunu, KIUH CEO.

Dr. Moses Galukande, President of ASOU, thanked KIUH, partners, and medical teams for their tireless efforts. “This collaboration has made a significant difference in the lives of many Ugandans. We look forward to continuing this noble work.”

The success of the National Free Surgical Week demonstrates the power of partnership in improving healthcare accessibility and quality in Uganda. The next medical camp is slated for West Nile, promising to bring hope and healing to another community in need.

The National Free Surgical Week was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU), Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH), Ministry of Health, and Uganda’s Parliament.
