The minister of state for sports Peter Ogwang has applauded the management fo BetPawa for partnering with the basketball fraternity.
It follows a sponsorship deal worth Shs 2.6 billion that the betting firm signed with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) to support the national basketball teams.
“We should clap for this special occasion. The problems facing sports can only be solved by private partners we have here. Elsewhere private sponsors play a big role to support teams, thanks to BetPawa for this partnership,” Ogwang said.
He also advocated for tax reduction on items and activities aimed at supporting the sports industry.
“We have a budget of Shs189bn for good causes in support of sport activities,”Ogwang said.
Marcus Kwikiriza, the CEO of FUBA said it was the first time basketball players were getting an incentive and also the first time a private company was sponsoring a national basketball team.
BetPawa’s chief commercial officer Ntoudi Mouyelo said the partnership will increase players exposure at home and abroad.
BetPawa will give the federation Shs 2.6bn towards the management of two national basketball teams, for men and women.
The package covers team travels, accomodation, medical insurance and Shs 150,000 to be paid to national team players per month.
