Karua had applied for the license a couple of weeks ago to enable her to lead the defence team of Dr Kizza Besigye who was arrested in Kenya and charged with possession of firearms by the General Court Martial. She flew into the country last week to finalize the process.

However, the council said today that Karua’s application was “politically motivated and was not based on professional grounds.”

Karua said she had been dissapointed by the decision.

“You can imagine President Museveni has been a staunch supporter of the East African Community and now it is Uganda treating in an unexpected manner a jurist from Kenya,” she said.

She said she will take legal action and will accompany other lawyers to the court martial for Besigye’s trial which resumes tomorrow.

The decision means that Erias Lukwago, the Kampala lord mayor will lead Besigye’s legal team for now.
