Beatrice Mao nominated for Kampala mayoral race

The Electoral Commission has nominated Beatrice Nambi Mao as a candidate for Kampala Lord Mayoral elections in 2026. Nambi is the wife of Norbert Mao, the minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and she is carrying the flag of the Democratic Party (DP). She was accompanied by party officials.

“I have been nominated to contest for the position of Lord Mayor of Kampala. This race should not be about political parties but about who can deliver services to the city’s residents,” she said.

Nambi expressed her commitment to serving the people of Kampala, focusing on key issues such as effective waste management, job creation for city residents, and empowering women and youth with entrepreneurial skills to reduce unemployment.

Nambi acknowledged that DP may have lost credibility in some circles but urged Ugandans to focus on unity rather than party affiliations.

“Residents are not struggling to pay bills because of a party’s colour,” she said. She emphasized that her campaign would prioritize unity within the DP to deliver services to Kampala’s residents.

She promised to introduce reforms in the management of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to restore hope among residents and the business community. She criticized Kampala Lord Maypr Erias Lukwago for failing to address critical challenges, including poor waste management, high youth and women unemployment and others.

John Bosco Kamoga, who stepped down in favour of Nambi, pledged his support to help her unseat Lukwago, whom they accused of overstaying in office without delivering meaningful services to the people.

Nambi is set to face a highly competitive race against against PFF’s Lukwago and Ronald Balimwezo of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
