Bank of Uganda launches third edition of Mutebile memorial squash tournament

The annual tournament honours Mutebile, the former governor of the central bank, for his contribution to Uganda’s economic development.

The Bank of Uganda, in partnership with Kampala Club, has launched the third edition of the Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile Memorial Squash Tournament, scheduled to run from April 13 to April 18.

The annual tournament honours Mutebile, the former governor of the central bank, for his contribution to Uganda’s economic development and his long-standing relationship with Kampala Club, where he was a member.

Kaliisa Kitongole, the deputy director at the central bank, said the tournament is intended to keep Mutebile’s legacy alive.

“His leadership and commitment to integrity, discipline, and institution-building left a lasting impact on Uganda’s economic development,” Kitongole said.

He added that supporting the tournament reflects the Bank of Uganda’s broader commitment to promoting health, sportsmanship, and community engagement, while also preserving Mutebile’s legacy.

Speaking at the launch at Kampala Club, Timothy Kayando, captain of the Kampala Squash Club, said this year’s edition is expected to attract about 80 players from Kenya and Uganda.

He said the tournament is open to all squash players.

“All players are allowed to participate, and winners will receive trophies and cash prizes from a total prize pool of Shs20m,” Kayando said.

The tournament, now in its third year, is steadily becoming a key event on Uganda’s squash calendar.

Ivan Wasswa, one of the players, said he is ready to compete.

“Every year, as professionals, we prepare for this memorable tournament,” Wasswa said
