Baba TV staff lock main studio protesting six months without pay

Management of Baba TV today held a crisis meeting to find solutions to grievances of staff particularly the salary arrears stretching to six months.

The meeting was called by the owner of the station Moses Balyeku after some workers locked the main studio, affecting the airing of the flagship morning show Gangamuka.

An employee at Baba TV told Bbeg Media that while the delay to pay them is a major concern, the management style of the new chief executive officer, Alice Namatovu is also under question.

Namatovu, a former sports analyst at UBC, is said to be aloof and appears not to have a clear grasp of what the CEO role entails.

“She does not listen to us,” said the employee who preferred anonymity.

We have been told that management and staff had signed a Memorandum of Understanding stipulating how and when the arrears will be cleared. However, staff say that management reneged on the MoU.

In today’s meeting, Balyeku assured staff that salary arrears for February will be cleared before the end of today. He was not committal on when other outstanding arrears will be settled.

A number of senior presenters like Adam Ali Kungu and Simon Muyanga Lutaya have since left the station for greener pastures.
