Archbishop Ssemogerere urges parents to dedicate time for their children

Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has urged parents to prioritise time with their children to lay a strong foundation for the future of Buganda and Uganda.

Speaking at a workshop of Buganda clan heads in Mengo, Ssemogerere, represented by Vicar General Monsignor Gerald Kalumba, said many families are on the verge of collapse because parents have not “dedicated sufficient time to nurturing children.”

Ssemogerere said numerous parents have delegated their responsibilities to housemaids, as well as matrons and wardens in boarding schools, where children spend most of their time. He urged parents to invest in their families to raise responsible citizens who learn ethical conduct from home.

Dr Augustine Mutumba, chairman of the organising committee for the meeting, said clan leaders should guide their subjects in preserving Buganda’s cultural norms and rituals.

He emphasised the importance of safeguarding Buganda’s cultural heritage, including language, dress code, traditional foods, and personal etiquette, which distinguish the Baganda from other communities.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, represented by Buganda Lukiiko Speaker Luwaga Mugumbule, praised clan leaders for their pivotal role in preserving Buganda’s culture and heritage, which face erosion due to modern influences such as Western medicine, languages, foods, and dress codes.

The annual workshop, attended by representatives from over 50 Buganda clans, serves as a platform to promote and communicate the kingdom’s cultural heritage to its subjects.
