The headmistress of Kololo High School Amina Mukasa Buyinza has said the school’s relatively good performance in last year’s UCE exams can be attributed to the banning of hawkers by Kampala Capital City Authority.
She said many of their students had concentrated on hawking as opposed to reading but when KCCA turned the screw on mobile vendors, they focused on academics. She made the remarks at the occasion to officially unveil the UCE results at the school.
The school registered 19 first grades out of 400 students who sat for UCE in 2023, the best performance in the USE era.
“Many of our students are hawkers but the time KCCA banned hawkers from streets our students have concentrated on their studies and absenteeism has reduced that is why we have even performed better,” she said.
Buyinza also said they had encountered challenges with some of their students who are drug users. She said they are being counselled.
Muhammed Nsereko, the Kampala Central MP who looks after 50 students at the school advised learners to be confident of themselves and study hard. He said those with specific talents should nurture them.
Kololo High School, which implements the Universal Secondary Education (USE) programme, has 2,000 students.
