Kiwanda, Singh Katongole among 37 NRM nominees for EALA slots

Singh Katongole being nominated for EALA

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has nominated more than 37 candidates to contest in the forthcoming by-elections for two vacant positions in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The vacancies were declared by EALA following the election of James Kakooza and Dennis Namara to Uganda’s 12th Parliament.

Among those nominated are former members of the NRM Central Executive Committee, including Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi and Singh Katongole Paminda.

The nominations were conducted by the NRM electoral commission, chaired by Dr Tanga Odoi, after candidates fulfilled all the required criteria.

Odoi said the list of nominees will be forwarded to the party’s Central Executive Committee for vetting, after which successful candidates will proceed to the election stage in due course.

Speaking to journalists after his nomination, Kiwanda highlighted his leadership experience. He cited his three terms as Member of Parliament for Mityana North and his previous role as minister of state for tourism.

“I am ready to serve in EALA because of my experience. I believe I have the capacity to advance the agenda of the East African Community, especially as the region moves towards deeper integration,” he said.

Katongole said he would prioritise strengthening regional trade if elected.

“Unity is key for East Africa. I will focus on building a stronger common market to benefit all member states,” he said.

Steven Bujjingo has also expressed interest in the race said he would advocate for a single currency, improved access to jobs across the region, and enhanced peace and stability among member states.

The EALA by-elections are expected to attract stiff competition, with political parties seeking to secure representation at the regional assembly.
