2024 Census: Most Rwandans in Uganda say they are ‘Born Again’

The majority of Banyarwanda in Uganda say they are Born-Again, the 2024 National Housing and Population Census shows.

At least 33.4 % of Banyarwanda told the census enumerators that they are Pentecostals. 29% of the Banyarwanda said they are Catholics while 18.6% identified themselves as Anglicans. Only 8% of the Banyarwanda in Uganda said they were Muslims.

Some of the prominent pastors in Uganda like Pastor Aloysius Bugingo is a Ugandan of Rwandan origin.

While the census report does not reveal the number of Ugandans of Rwandan origin living in Uganda, some reports indicate that they are close to 1 million. The first group of Rwandans came to Uganda in the 1930s as casual labourers on farms and plantations. They inter-married with other ethnic groups and their offspring are now considered Ugandans.

However, the ethnic group with the highest percentage of people who are Pentecostals is the Sabiny in Eastern Uganda (43%) followed by the Maragoli (41%) who live in Bunyoro. The Aringa ethnic group in West Nile has the lowest percentage of people identifying as Pentecostals (0.5%)
