Speaker Among hides behind Anti-Gay law, refuses to respond to “rumours” about rot in Parliament

Speaker Anita Among has finally responded to the allegations about mismanagement of public funds by Parliament under her watch by saying: “I will not respond.”

In a plenary meeting today, she said, “I will never give you answers based on hearsay, on rumormongering. And we aren’t going to run this House on rumormongering. Me to answer you on hearsay, on things you have cooked on social media, because I have said no to bum shafting I will not.”

She also claimed, like she has often, that the attacks on her and Parliament stem from their decision to enact the Anti-Homosexuality Law, for which she has no apology.

Among has been accused by activists behind the #UgandaParliamentExhibition of presiding over arguably the biggest heist of taxpayer’s money.

She has personally been accused of irregularly recruiting relatives and friends into parliamentary service and of diverting resources to her private businesses.

On Friday, she referred to those allegations as rumours saying she does not have time to respond to such.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi had urged Parliament to come out and clear the air on the revelations.

“There has been deafening silence from this Institution regarding the issues raised by the people and like we are saying, we are a people centered Parliament. I have seen the Spokesperson of this Parliament on some TV and Radio stations confirming some, saying some are partially correct, some of these allegations are exaggerated. But this institution, which is a people centered Parliament hasn’t come out comprehensively, unequivocally, to explain itself to the people, to account to the people of Uganda,” said Ssenyonyi.
