Equity Bank urges Ugandans abroad to invest beyond remittances

Uganda’s diaspora continues to send record amounts of money back home, and Equity Bank Uganda is stepping up efforts to help turn those remittances into long-term investments that create businesses, jobs and sustainable wealth.

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the bank will host the latest edition of its Equity Diaspora Webinar Series.

The initiative is designed to equip Ugandans living abroad with practical knowledge, expert guidance and tailored financial solutions to help them invest confidently in Uganda.

The virtual event will feature Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, who is expected to discuss the growing role of diaspora investment in transforming Uganda’s economy.

The webinar is part of Equity Bank Uganda’s broader strategy to promote financial planning, wealth creation and investment opportunities for Ugandans living overseas.

This edition will focus on how the billions of shillings sent home every year can be channelled beyond household expenses into productive sectors such as business, commercial agriculture, real estate and manufacturing.

The discussion comes as Uganda’s diaspora continues to play an increasingly important role in the country’s economy.

In 2025, Uganda received a record $2.5 billion (Shs9.3 trillion), in remittances from Ugandans living abroad. The inflows accounted for about 3.8% of the GDP.

Although much of this money supports families by paying for education, healthcare, housing and daily living expenses, it also presents a major opportunity to finance long-term investments that can stimulate economic growth.

Equity Bank Uganda says that with the right financial guidance, investment products and banking solutions, diaspora remittances can become a stronger driver of entrepreneurship, business expansion and wealth creation.

Through the webinar series, the bank aims to position itself as more than a money transfer provider. It wants to serve as a trusted investment partner by connecting Ugandans abroad with financial solutions that enable them to save, invest and manage their investments back home with confidence.

The discussion is expected to examine how sound public policy, financial innovation and secure digital banking can work together to unlock more investment opportunities for Ugandans living abroad.

The webinar also builds on Equity Bank Uganda’s growing recognition in diaspora banking.

Earlier this year, the bank was named Corporate Business of the Year at the African Business Chamber African Business Awards 2026 in London.

The award recognised its contribution to financial inclusion, cross-border banking, trade facilitation and diaspora investment across Africa.

As digital banking continues to transform cross-border financial services, Equity Bank Uganda says it is using technology together with personalised advisory services to help customers manage their investments conveniently from anywhere in the world.

Through the Equity Diaspora Webinar Series, the bank hopes to encourage Ugandans abroad to do more than send money home. It wants to support informed investment decisions that create lasting wealth for families while contributing to Uganda’s long-term economic transformation.
