There was a reduction in crime in 2023 compared to the previous year, the police’s annual crime report released today has revealed.
The report released today by IGP Okoth Ochola notes that 228,074 cases were reported in 2023 compared to 231,653 cases in 2022, a reduction of 1.5%.
Of the total cases reported last year, 84,907 were taken to court, those that were successfully prosecuted were 27,125 while acquittals were 843.
At least 10,096 cases were dismissed and 46,843 are still pending in court.
Theft was the most reported crime accounting for 65,901 cases. This represents an increase of more than 5,000 cases compared in 2022 when there were 61,508 cases.
Cases of assault were 29,884, domestic violence (14,681), sexual related cases were 14,846, house break-ins (14,543), child related (10,741) and economic cases were (12,924). There were 300 cases of murder by shooting which led to the death of 330 people.
Cases of human rights violations by the police were 933.
IGP Ochola said the crime was on a downward spiral. He said they had improved on detention facilities in 10 districts.
